Today’s estate came about through the union of two families of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil winegrowers – the Godefroys and the Amiraults – when my parents married in 1971.
The vines grow mainly on gravel from ancient Loire islands – Les Montilles de la Taille and Les Champs Colesses – which produces soft aromatic red and rosé wines. We cultivate our vineyards sustainably, alternating natural ground cover with tillage between the rows. A particular property of the gravel is that it warms up quickly in spring, which results in early vine maturity. The remainder of the vines flourish on a silica gravel terrace, which produces fine, extremely elegant wines which age well.
These terroirs have a microclimate, being protected from the cold north winds by the plateau forest and exposed to the western and south-western sea winds, which bring humidity and warmer temperatures. Natural ground cover is left to grow in the whole vineyard area in a quest for quality over quantity. We only treat when absolutely necessary and, for environmental reasons, we endeavour to treat less and less each year.
