THE SAINT NICOLAS DE BOURGUEIL ECOSYSTEM
An appellation in a village of irrepressible winegrowers
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil is the name of both the village and the red wine it produces. It lies just below a forest and above troglodytic cellars on the banks of the Loire in the heart of a Nature Park in western France. All our inhabitants live according to the rhythm of the seasons and the work in the vineyards and, because our place of work is also where we live, it makes sense to us to look after our environment.
We work as one to protect our vineyards and ward off the threats of climate change, using jointly selected alternative bio-control methods that are less invasive. We also still operate one of the last independent procurement and supply structures. Each and every day we realise that “Alone you can work faster but together you can go further”.

“LA REDEMANDE”
Loved for its elegance
The wines of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil are sociable and easy drinking, earning them the nickname “la redemande”: a wine you will order again and again, as the French name suggests. It’s a popular choice in most Paris brasseries but this popularity means we sometimes forget the appellation also produces wines which are true to terroir, crafted by artisan winemakers for laying down and celebrating more special occasions.
In the heart of the Loire Valley
An unforgettable journey between vineyards and castles
The wine route runs 800 km along the Loire from Nantes to Clermont-Ferrand. It alternates between vine fields and majestic royal castles, symbols of this French way of life. A vineyard of diversity, renowned both for its whites and reds, it is home to no less than 24 grape varieties and 69 appellations.
CABERNET FRANC
THE MAIN SAINT NICOLAS DE BOURGUEIL GRAPE
The Cabernet Franc grape is grown predominantly in France and flourishes on the Atlantic coast, between Aquitaine and the Loire Valley. Its elegant, aromatic qualities and lovely structure lend themselves to delicately fruity convivial wines but also deep, soft tannin wines for laying down. Because Cabernet Franc is found in 95% of Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wine, it is the work of our 100 or so winemakers on their land and in their wineries which adds individuality to their wines.
CROSS-SECTION OF THE VILLAGE
Behind our united front lies a plethora of individual terroirs
Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil stretches east to west through tuffeau forests to the bed of the Loire. The village has three very distinct terroirs, each with its own diversity of subsoils. It is in this that the originality and typicity of the wines lie. To gain a better understanding of these terroirs, we are going to commission a soil study based on 1,000 core samples.

Ground :
Composed of gravel from the ancient islands of the Loire.
The water resource is well managed, thanks to the presence of the clay subsoil the vine does not suffer from stress. Recent alluvium enriches and nourishes the soil.
Wine profile :
Intense and brilliant colour, expressive nose of raspberry, blackberry and violet. Balanced and sustained structure, lively and fresh tannins. Fruity wine, supple on the palate.

Ground :
The sands and gravels of the plateau: They are composed of marine deposits dating back to the Quaternary period. There are many fossils (sponges and sea urchins). The soil is very draining, where only the vine finds its balance. This is the “Cradle of the appellation”, it is here that the vegetation gives the “top start” from spring.
Wine profile :
A wine of pleasure and celebration, the supple and harmonious palate delivers aromas of raspberry and wild strawberry, supported by subtle and refined tannins.
Tuffeau Around 300 ha
Places and hamlets :
Les Bois de la Cave Mureau, Le Vau Jaumier, Le Clos Pichard, Le Vau Renou, Les Caves du Vau Renou, Lomgard, Les Caves de la Gardière, La Bouchellière, Le Bas Mortier, Le Grand Mortier, Les Clos Lourioux, Le Clos de l’Epaisse, Le Vau Bahus, Le Champ Perrault, Les Cognettes, Le Plessis, Beau Puy, Les Malgagnes, Les Petits Bois, Chevrette, Les Pêchers, Les Chignardais, Le Carroi
Taveau, Les Turrelières, Le Clos de la Martellière, La Torilliere, L’épaisse.
Ground :
The tuffeau of the hillside: The tuffeau is a limestone rock. Sometimes covered with flint clay or wind sand. This tufa vein originates in the west of the commune and widens towards the east. The vine adapts and develops a deep root system through the limestone. The tufa was extracted by our ancestors, for the construction of houses and villages. These tufa quarries have become the cellars where our wines are aged, in which we sometimes observe the roots of the vine at the surface of the walls.
Wine profile :
Wine with a deeper, darker colour, ruby reflections; aromatic, generous with black fruit aromas. Complex, robust, fleshy, rounded tannins, powerful body, good intensity with persistence.
